Puget Sound ASHRAE is proud to be a partner of the Seattle Design Festival!  The 2012 Festival is the second annual celebration in Seattle of the relevance and power of design.  The 4-day “super weekend” of design, September 20-23, will show how design adds value to our lives, our city, and our region.

The second annual Seattle Design Festival will bring speakers, tours, exhibits, outdoor installations, activities, films, and more to South Lake Union from September 20-23, 2012With its theme of “Engage Your World,” the Festival invites the public to participate in a conversation about urban life that is both playful and serious.

The hub of the festival will be the “Design Block” on John Street near Denny and Westlake, where you’ll find cargo containers turned into pop-up shops and activity stations, simple materials into street furniture, and weather balloons into a “cloud” for projections. Mingle, browse, relax; enjoy food tastings, a beer garden, music, and more...
The “Design Block” is free and open to the public. Some events require tickets and reservations. The Seattle Design Festival is a program of Design in Public, a multidisciplinary nonprofit organization that promotes the role of design in improving our community.

AIA Seattle Launches Design in Public

AIA Seattle members have been working hard over the past two years to bring you a new affiliate nonprofit organization, Design in Public, creator of the Seattle Design Festival. Design in Public is a multidisciplinary organization that promotes the role of design in improving our community. Inspired by successful models in cities around the world, the organization was founded in 2011 by AIA Seattle in direct response to feedback from our members about the importance of an elevated discussion of design in the public realm.

The new Design in Public website highlights its work throughout the year, including this year's festival, scheduled for September 20-23, 2012.  You will still be able to access the Festival's offerings directly at www.seattledesignfestival.org.

The annual Seattle Design Festival is the region's largest interdisciplinary design event. This year's theme, "Engage Your World," explores ways that design can improve and increase our interactions with the urban environment. The four-day event features activities, exhibits, films, tours, speakers, and a pop-up "Design Block," the hub of this year's festival, in South Lake Union.

Design in Public plans to expand its public programming beyond the annual Design Festival to a set of comprehensive, year-round offerings that enable creative thinking and relevant, design-based solutions to community challenges.

As Steven McKay, Principal, DLR Group said at a recent fundraiser for Design in Public, "Great design can be inspiring, beautiful, innovative, efficient and functional, but the measure of truly great design... is [whether it] engages and elevates the human experience." Design in Public has the power to be a "catalyst" for a movement in our city and region that changes its course.

Sharpen your skills in Energy Modeling, Refrigerants or Cold Climate Design at one of ASHRAE’s three upcoming specialty conferences taking place in October and November 2012. These conferences feature peer-reviewed papers, presentations with hands-on information presented in a non-commercial format, Professional Development Hours and networking opportunities

Energy Modeling Conference, Oct. 1–3, 2012

Atlanta, Georgia
Building on the successful Energy Modeling Conference format in April 2011, this conference highlights numerous hands-on application-type presentations. Of special interest is the interactive session with modeling software developers presenting common modeling scenarios on how their specific software can model a scenario, whether there are any limitations and what might be the best work around and exceptional modeling practices to obtain acceptable results when the tool cannot model the scenario “out-of-the-box.”

ASHRAE/NIST Refrigerants Conference, Oct. 29–30, 2012

Gaithersburg, Maryland
This conference provides an opportunity for participants to learn about the latest information on alternative refrigerants, likely time schedules, transition requirements, environmental effects of refrigerants, new refrigerant performance considerations and what will be required to phase-out the use of high GWP refrigerants with alternatives and other technologies. This is the fourth jointly sponsored conference between ASHRAE and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and presents peer-reviewed papers.

7th INTERNATIONAL COLD CLIMATE HVAC CONFERENCE

Nov. 12–14, 2012

Calgary, Alberta, Canada
The principal objective of Cold Climate HVAC 2012 is to provide key elements of a strategy by which scientists, designers, engineers, manufacturers and other decision makers in cold climate regions can achieve good indoor environmental quality (IEQ), with a minimum use of resources and energy. Some 60 peer-reviewed papers presented by diverse, international authors showcase world-wide perspectives and practices in cold climate design.
