CDi Engineers, has an immediate opening for a Designer with 3-4 years of experience. The candidate will be responsible for design and layout of mechanical and plumbing systems in a 3D modeling software.  Must have 3-4 years experience in mechanical equipment specification, client site visits, and the ability to read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, schematics, etc.  REVIT experience is preferred but not required.

CDi also has an immediate opening for an entry level Mechanical Engineer; recent and enthusiastic college graduates are welcomed to apply.

SEDR is hosting a presentation on IES Energy Simulation Software.

One of the major players in energy simulation is Integrated Environmental Solutions, with software targeted towards Engineers (VE Pro) and Architects (VE-Gaia).  We will hear from Nathan Kegel (IES Ltd). and Ken Hall (Director of Sustainable Design, Gensler).  Gensler uses IES (VE-Gaia & VE-Pro).

Nathan and Ken will provide architects, engineers, sustainability consultants and academia with an overview of both early-stage and detailed analysis capabilities within the IES software, many of which are applicable to various LEED rating systems including ASHRAE 90.1 PRM (Appendix G).

The software is ASHRAE Standard 140-2007 certified, EPAct Qualified, and is accepted for LEED Energy, Daylight, Comfort, Water & Ventilation Credits by the Canadian & US Green Building Councils.  A host of other international rating systems can also be analyzed in the including BREEAM, Green Star, GreenMark, New Zealand, and LEED India.

Other capabilities include importing 3D model buildings from Google SketchUp and Revit; Climate and Solar analysis; Lamp/luminaire selection and Artificial Lighting Design & Analysis; Day lighting Analysis including both Radiosity (LEED IEQc8.1) & Radiance ray-tracing methodologies; Daylight harvesting implementation for energy savings; Glare Analysis; Occupancy Comfort (LEED IEQc7.1); Renewable Energy Technologies Analysis (LEED EAc2, EAc6).

Presenter Bios:

Nathan has over 10 years of HVAC design experience and building modelling experience.  He is a LEED Accredited Professional and is active in a host of sustainability organizations including ASHRAE, USGBC, and IBPSA.  He has recently been asked to serve on the board of directors for gbxml.org and is the co-founder of the IBPSA Twin Cities chapter.  Nathan is familiar with many modelling tools including Trane TRACE, Carrier HAP, eQuest, and IES .  In his current role, he provides training, support and consulting to customers across North America.

Ken Hall, AIA, is Director of Sustainable Design Systems at Gensler, a global planning, architecture and interiors design firm.  Ken leads the firmwide initiative to integrate sustainable design performance modeling and simulation into practice.  Hall is a nationally certified Sustainable Building Advisor and LEED AP with 30 years of experience leading technology innovation and adoption.

The sustainable design community has traditionally focused its efforts on new commercial construction, usually involving larger projects. This focus has started to widen recently with the realization that investments made in green renovations of the existing commercial building stock can be leveraged to produce
considerable energy savings and a significant reduction in their carbon footprints. Existing commercial buildings under 50,000 sq ft make up over 95% of the commercial building stock (by number) and represent an immense cache of embodied energy. With this in mind, the National Trust for Historic Preservation
founded Preservation Green Lab in 2009. It is focused on developing approaches and policies that will make green renovation of existing buildings easier to accomplish and more viable in the eyes of all participants.
Several cities (NYC, San Francisco, Seattle…) are now starting to implement regulations and consider approaches that recognize the value of renovating existing buildings and the special issues and opportunities that are likely to be encountered. Ric Cochrane, the Building Performance Programs Manager at PGL, will be talking about some of these cultural, political and scientific factors that are behind this emerging
awareness and area of practice. He will be using the recent green renovation of the 95 year old Terry Avenue Building in south Lake Union as a case study to illustrate the opportunities and challenges that are inherent in this newly emerging area. Joe Giampietro, an architect whose CV includes both a long
history of practice in sustainable design and a stint as a property developer, will be providing some observations and insights that come from the perspective of the development community. SEDR is the Seattle Energy & Design Roundtable, with gatherings on the 3rd Monday of each month to discuss how to
inform energy-efficient design with software and metrics.

NEEC Training 

The Northwest Energy Efficiency Council is pleased to announce that we are offering focused topic trainings about the 2009 WA State Non-Residential Energy Code (NREC) in various locations around the state this year.  The City of Shoreline is the host for our trainings serving the North Puget Sound area in their new City Hall that recently was awarded LEED Gold certification.

• Fundamentals of building science and general NREC requirements for moisture control, air barriers and continuous insulation

10:45am-Noon - NREC Envelope Compliance Forms

• Summary of compliance paths and instructions on how to fill out the NREC envelope compliance forms.  Includes discussion of how to confirm this information relative to drawings and specs.

Noon-1:15pm – Lunchtime Q&A

• NEEC Energy Code specialist will offer a lunch time open Q&A where attendees can ask their general questions

1:15-3:00pm – Lighting Systems Compliance

• Discussion of lighting and daylighting zone controls, interior/exterior LPA calculations and applicable exemptions.  Includes instructions on how to fill out the NREC interior and exterior lighting compliance forms.

3:15-4:30pm – Mechanical Systems Right Sizing

• Mechanical system sizing criteria in the NREC and how it impacts system selection and performance.  Includes load calculation submittal requirements for simple and complex systems and a discussion of how to review this information.

• NREC Trainings in Bellingham – Similar format as NREC trainings in Shoreline.  Event will be held Tuesday, July 31st at City of Bellingham ITSD Building.
• NREC Trainings in Issaquah, Des Moines and Seattle – Additional training opportunities will be scheduled in these areas in August and September.  
• Envelope Continuity Comprehensive Training – A 4-hour training that covers the fundamentals of building science, water vapor control, air barriers and continuous insulation.  This training will be offered in Olympia in August and in Seattle, Vancouver and Tri-Cities in the fall.

ASHRAE Announces Fall Online Courses

ATLANTA – A full slate of online courses touching on a range of built environment topics is being offered by ASHRAE this fall.

The 11 ASHRAE Learning Institute courses provide professional development through in-depth information that is timely, practical and targeted to provide engineers in consulting practices, facility management or supplier support with instruction on applying ASRHAE standards and employing new technologies essential for advanced building performance. The online courses allow attendees to learn from anywhere with an Internet connection. Upon course completion, the successful student will be able to:

-Comprehend the range of commissioning types.
-Identify when, where and what type of commissioning may be appropriate for their building or project and what elements make up a successful project.
-Understand the role of a building operator in the commissioning process and how they can reduce cost through active participation in the process.
-Assist with field commissioning activities and report writing.
-Establish a list of expected work products (deliverables) from a third party commissioning service provider that enhances the operation and maintenance of buildings.

Description:

Building Commissioning is a systematic process that spans the entire life of a building from project inception and design to construction and occupancy. It is a quality-oriented process for achieving, verifying, and documenting that the quality and performance of facilities, systems, and assemblies meets defined objectives and criteria. Tests evaluate performance of systems to measure their performance, effectiveness, and energy efficiency.

In this 54 hour course, students will focus on:

-Terminology and history of commissioning, and the current state of commissioning practice
-The commissioning process for existing and new buildings
-Applicable codes, standards and commissioning guidelines
-Scheduling and project integration
-Test procedure development and use
-Field testing and report writing
-Application of the commissioning process to various building systems (including HVAC, lighting, exteriors, plumbing, power, and controls)
-Career pathways
-During lab work and site visits, students will use hardware, tolls, software, and calculations

Pre-requisites:

COMPASS English scores equivalent to 11th grade reading and writing level or, transcript showing 2.0 GPA in equivalent English class. Course requires high school level algebra and computer literacy including Excel, prior experience with basic energy calculations and basic financial data preparation for project proposals. Exceptions by permission of the instructor.
